One has to wonder what, exactly, Mike Oldfield was up to when he cut not one, but two follow-up records two decades after the initial offering. More than likely, it was because Tubular Bells was easily Oldfield's greatest commercial success, but still there's a question as to whether he was eventually talked into it by Warner Brothers records. Whatever the case, the latter two albums do not equal of the first one. Tubular Bells, Vol 2 is more successful than Vol. 3 in that it contains some of the old fire and invention that made Oldfield's best recordings so thought-provoking. His compositional skill, and his ability to play literally dozens of instruments doesn't hurt either. That said, there is something tedious about TB, Vol. 2 after the first four or five selections; it's as if one is hearing the same music repeated after the initial rush wears off. TB, Vol. 3 is just pure new age self-indulgence. Long electronic ambient sound passages take the place of actual music on the album and the electronic percussion in use feels forced, like rescued Tangerine Dream outtakes. Putting these two puppies in one package without a price reduction seems like a waste of packaging and time: hardcore Oldfield fans already have them, and sorry to say, it's hard to imagine anyone else wanting them.
